According to Deadline, James Franco’s shelved film ‘Zeroville’ will receive distribution after being picked up by the online distribution company MyCinema.
Zeroville is based on the novel of the same name by Steve Erickson. The film is written for the screen, directed by and stars James Franco as a young actor who arrives in 1969 Hollywood during a transitional time in the industry. The film was actually shot in 2015 with the production company Alchemy, but due to financial turmoil and Alchemy’s unfortunate bankruptcy it was shelved until now. The film is expected to hit select theaters in the summer of 2019.
While it’s hard to believe that a quality film couldn’t find its way to theaters for several years, we should be reminded of Kenneth Lonergan’s acclaimed (Manchester by the Sea) Margaret, which was shot in 2005 but not released until 2011. Mad Max: Fury Road was shot in 2012 but not released 2015, where it was nominated for ten Oscars and won six. Perhaps one of the reasons for Zeroville’s delayed release is Franco’s busy schedule that could conflict with re-shoots. Franco is currently slated to have six films to be released this year.
Hopefully once Franco’s schedule clears up we can get his much promised Burkowski biopic that he’s been talking about for some years now.
Recently, we at Salem TV Film Updates conducted a Twitter poll asking “Who do you think is the best working director today? The results from our survey are in, and amongst Quentin Tarantino, Denis Villeneuve, and Christopher Nolan, Jordan Peele has come in first place as best working director.
Continue reading “Jordan Peele Wins Poll For Best Working Director”This year’s hostless Oscars was full of surprises and snubs. Best picture winner ‘Green Book’ has a cloud of controversy surrounding it. We’ll discuss the winners and losers for various categories; who we think should have won, lost, and been nominated.
Cameron: This year was frustrating. This might be the first year where I was turned off from the Oscars and am starting to lose faith in the award season. I believe this year was full of snubs and unwarranted surprise wins. Bohemian Rhapsody winning any award is incredibly frustrating. Especially since it won best sound mixing and design over Roma and/or First Man. However, this biggest offense was not nominating Ethan Hawke for Best Actor and Paul Schrader for Best Director. Bradley Cooper was also snubbed out of a Best Director nomination for A Star is Born. I did agree with the Black Panther wins, but did not agree with the best picture nomination.
Amber: I approved and disapproved of many of the Oscar winners in this years Oscars. Bohemian Rhapsody won the majority of the Oscars. It truly was a remarkable screenplay, but certainly did not deserve to win best editing which should have gone to Christopher Robin for the remarkable editing that integrated characters from Winnie the Pooh into the real world. Rami Malek absolutely did deserve to win best actor in his role as Freddie Mercury, as he portrayed the essence of the legend, Freddie Mercury. I was very disappointed that Lady Gaga did not win best actress for her role in A Star is Born, as she was outstanding in her performance as Ally.
Sarah: The award winners of the 2019 oscars were very diverse which is a great improvement over past years where the oscars was criticized for only awarding mainly white films. I agree greatly that Domee Shi’s “Bao” winning best animated short was the right decision. The animation and story behind that short film was astounding. However, there were still many winners who were not so deserving. I do not believe Green Book should have won best picture as the movie was very controversial.
Casey: I was very surprised to see Bohemian Rhapsody take home 4 awards. This is a film that received a measly 60% on rottentomatoes.com and 49% on metacritic.com. Another major snub was Bradley Cooper for best director of A Star is Born. Some of the decisions of the academy lead one to believe that they may be a bit out of touch with the viewers who are paying to see these films.
